British scientists discover some "new secrets" of "extending life"

Release date: 2017-10-18

In "Journey to the West", all the monsters want to eat a long-lived "Tang Yu meat." In fact, since ancient times, human beings have been actively seeking the secret to retain youth and prolong life. A recent publication in the Nature issue found some "new secrets" that extend life.

In a paper published on October 13, a team led by British scientists found a new molecular pathway to control the lifespan of nematodes and mammals. This achievement clarifies what happened during aging and laid the foundation for designing ways to delay aging.

Specifically, the researchers found that certain nematodes with too high levels of protein live longer and healthier than ordinary nematodes. In addition, mice with excessive protein levels have also been shown to have delayed vascular dysfunction associated with aging.

Dr. Nelson Hsieh, co-first author of the paper, suggests that by artificially increasing or decreasing the level of a protein family called Kruppel-like transcription factors (KLF), nematodes can live longer or have a shorter lifespan. . In addition, what is really exciting is that the data suggest that KLFs have similar effects on aging in mammals.

Further investigation also found that KLF works by controlling autophagy. Autophagy is a process of recycling cells used to remove "residues" such as misfolded proteins and normal molecular by-products that accumulate in old age. As cells age, their ability to perform autophagy decreases, which can lead to accumulation of toxic protein polymers, which ultimately expose cells to survival. The new study confirms that CLF-free nematodes cannot maintain autophagy and die very early.

Scientists believe that this study has a very important impact on understanding aging and its related diseases. Professor Mukesh K. Jain, who led the study, said: "KLF levels will decrease with age, and maintaining KLF levels can prevent age-related vascular loss. These findings are very meaningful because vascular dysfunction contributes to multiple Diseases associated with aging, such as high Blood Pressure , heart disease, and dementia."

The researchers revealed that their next step is to investigate the precise mechanisms behind autophagy that help improve vascular function; at the same time, they will look for strategies to target KLF proteins in humans.
