For the first time, the research team at Osaka University in Japan directly observed the effects of anticancer drugs entering cancer cell DNA. Scientists have speculated that anticancer drugs have inhibited cancer cell proliferation by replacing thymidine in DNA, thereby exerting anti-tumor effects, but have not been able to directly observe anticancer drugs entering DNA.

This time, the research and development team of Osaka University directly observed the nucleic acid analog type anticancer drug in DNA by using a single-molecular subsequencer that can identify DNA base molecules one by one, and successfully determined the base sequence. The move is expected to identify mechanisms by which anticancer drugs enter DNA and alter DNA function, thereby developing new anticancer drugs.

The research results have recently been published in the British scientific journal Scientific Reports.
