In the past few years, a group of researchers at the internationally renowned University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has been working on a new bio-robot that uses muscle cells, 3D print holders, and electronic and optical pulses to move. Now, the team decided to share its research so that anyone with the right tools and skills can make their own 3D printed biobot.
It is understood that a detailed description of how to build the current generation of biological robots was recently published in the journal Nature Protocols. Ritu Raman, the lead author of the paper and a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Bioengineering, explains that the description covers every step of building a biorobot, from "3D printed skeletons to tissue engineered skeletal muscle actuators." The article also lists every device, every tool, and every component that is needed so that interested individuals or teams can create their own biobots.
These bio-robots, developed by the University of Illinois, are less than 1 cm in size and can be used in a variety of different applications with great potential. As the researchers say, biobots "have one day to perform complex behaviors such as self-assembly, self-organization, self-healing, and tweaking structures and functions to best fit their environment."
This adaptability is one of the main driving forces for the advancement of bio-robots. By integrating into biological materials, bio-robots can react to or record in their environment. According to the University of Illinois research team, biobots can be used in health, sensing, and environmental applications.
By providing a "recipe" for making 3D printed biobots (a process that takes about eight days), researchers hope to accelerate the development of biorobots and tissue engineering. 3D printing has also played a key role in the development of biological robots, providing researchers with the tools they need to build their organisms.
