Researchers from the University of Tübingen, Germany, published a report in the latest issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases in the United States, stating that children who have severe malaria can be treated in three doses within two days. The previous recommendation from the World Health Organization was to use five doses within three days.
The results of this study can reduce the cost of treatment by approximately 40%. For Africa with a high incidence of malaria, this result is expected to enable more children to be treated.
The researchers found that in 174 children aged 6 months to 10 years and children with severe malaria, they were divided into five intravenous injections of the malaria treatment drug artesunate within 72 hours and divided into 3 hours within 48 hours. Subsequent injection of artesunate, the efficacy of the two methods are basically the same. The next research direction of researchers is whether intramuscular injection of artesunate can be used instead of intravenous injection. If the research is successful, the cost of treatment will be further reduced.
