In the 1960s, I accepted the anti-malaria research mission of the “523†office in the absence of anti-malarial chloroquine and human malaria.
I first collected and sorted out Chinese medicine classics, visited famous Chinese medicine practitioners, and collected more than 640 kinds of traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions for treating malaria. These prescriptions guide our team's subsequent extraction and separation studies of Chinese herbal medicines.
In the predicament of the unstable pharmacodynamics of Artemisia annua L. extract, the record of the stalk of malaria sinensis in the Eastern Jinshan Gehong “Elbow Reserve Emergency†enlightened our research ideas. We improved the extraction process and enriched the resistance of Artemisia annua L. Malaria ingredients, and eventually discovered artemisinin in 1972.
The opportunity of history has made me lucky to participate in the research and development of antimalarial drugs. The discovery of artemisinin is a small step in the process of human conquest of malaria, and it is also a gift from Chinese traditional medicine to human beings.
