Nowadays, diabetes has become a big problem for human beings. According to the data, in 2013, about 382 million adults worldwide had diabetes, and the number of diabetic patients in China ranked first in the world.
Predicting the risk of diabetes in advance is the key to preventing and treating diabetes. However, hungry, bloody, long hours of waiting... These unpleasant but essential traditional diabetes testing procedures have made many people annoyed.
Nowadays, a scientific and technological achievements transformation product from the Hefei Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has slowly rewritten the old history of diabetes detection and treatment.
One minute out of results
Sitting in a sofa-like machine, the subject simply places the left-hand arm in the groove in the armrest position and aligns the metal probe. A minute later, the test results of the detailed physical information of the examinee were "spit" from the machine.
“Our products detect glycation end products by fluorescence spectroscopy, which quickly determines the risk of diabetes in the subject,†said Dr. Wang Kunkun from the Institute of Applied Technology, Hefei Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The secret of such a quickness is in the inconspicuous metal probe. The metal probe consists of dozens of fibers that, when detected, shine into the dermis layer of the human skin. "There is a class of substances in the dermis called glycation end products. The concentration changes are biomarkers that suggest diabetes and possible complications in the future." Wang Yukun explained.
It turns out that the glycosylation end product has fluorescent properties that are captured by the fiber in the metal probe, allowing it to be spectrally analyzed and processed to reflect the desired result. Wang Yukun said that the new detector is not affected by blood sugar fluctuations, and it does not matter whether it is used before and after meals.
So, what is the accuracy of the new detector compared to the traditional method?
There are three main methods for detecting diabetes: fasting blood glucose (accuracy rate 40% to 70%), glycated hemoglobin (accuracy rate 77%), glucose tolerance test (accuracy rate 100%, gold standard). “The accuracy of the new detectors can reach 80% to 95%.†Wang Xiaokun pointed out that because the new products greatly shorten the waiting time for testing results, large-scale screening can be conducted for medical centers and communities.
