Surgical robot can be configured with 3D printed bionic skin

Engineers at the University of Minnesota have designed and built a unique versatile 3D printer that prints malleable electronics. It has 4 different nozzles and special inks that print out fabric-like materials layer by layer.

It first prints a layer of silicone to make the material elastic; then prints two layers of conductive layer (one layer on top, one layer on the bottom) as an electrode; secondly, a coil-shaped pressure sensor; and finally a "sacrificial" layer. Keep everything in place - it will eventually be washed away and will not appear in the finished product.

The device "feels" and delivers pressure, which is similar to the tactile sensation of the skin. This "tactile sensor" has many applications. For example, if the bionic skin is installed for a surgical robot, they can feel the surrounding environment during the surgery, rather than just relying on the camera as it is now. In addition, it gives robots a sense of touch, helping them walk or better interact with the environment.

The most exciting part of this technology is: First, the finished product is completely soft, each layer of material can be stretched to three times the original area; second, the entire printing process can be carried out at room temperature. Traditional 3D printing systems use high-temperature molten materials, and this new technology can be printed directly on living human skin – although researchers have not done so yet, they have successfully printed on the model. The finished product is soft and flexible enough to not interfere with movement or break during use.
